Ready(?)

We used to hold a 'despedida' party whenever a colleague of ours decided to go home for good. This was in the early part of our stay here and the situations then were better than today. Some can be said to be lucky as they were able to established a good business or were still able to land a good job despite their age.

This time it's different. I can't remember now when was the last time we held a 'despedida' party for somebody. Not that nobody now was leaving but the situation does not warrant any celebration. There are those who will be leaving or have to go because of illness or sometimes because of family problems. It feels very sad when you see some colleagues who have to go because of illnesses. All our lives we dream of spending the fruit of our sacrifice of being away from our families, longing that someday we will go home for good and stay with our families with enough savings to keep us moving.

Most of us here are waiting for the moment, but you will feel that nobody is raring to go. We have been here really for almost or more than half of our lives. One of my colleagues told me that when he first left the Philippines her daughter was five years old. Now he told me her grand-daughter with her daughter is now five years old. Most of his children have now finished their education, but still he said he doesn't feel it is time to go. It's difficult to live in the Philippines and as much as possible and as long as we are able and are allowed to work here we just keep on going and just enjoy a vacation every year.

I hope when the time comes, it is either the situation in the Philippines improve or we can have even just enough to make a living together with our families.

'lam mo ang tagal ko nang magpost ng tungkol dito pero urong-sulong ako. Many years ago, my husband and I were in a deep doodoo. We built a house that we could not sustain. Not that we could not get help from our immediate relations, there were a lot of them offering in fact, but we both agreed that we were going to live on our own. In short, nagsara ang kumpanya dala ng strikes. He got a better job after that and I could tell na we were both doing fine professionally. We were holding good positions. Despite that, our monthly salaries kahit nasa mid scale na wala pa ring napupuntahan. And then another threat came in, this company he was in was also going to scale down. Nagdecide na kami, we had to do something. Saudi was one option. My husband's an engineer.

Ang kaso mo I had a better chance coming here nga. Pagdating namin dito, wala ring pagkaka-iba. You're always afraid of businesses closing. My point is, kahit saan ka pala, nandoon palagi ang threat and therefore you have to make the best of every situation.

One thing I learned..save for a rainy day. I hope you are saving for yourself. I'm sure well provided ang family mo but make them feel that money is not everything..meron pang love.

I also have to grab an opportunity coming here. But until now it seems I cannot decide if it is really time to stop. All my previous savings were spent on acquiring and improving our house. So now we are virtually back to zero. Saudi is one good place if you really want to save. But the situation right now is not as good as before. They are also cutting down on cost and implementing a Saudization program regarding job employment which means anytime we should be ready to go. Our Saudi colleagues said not to worry but it is better to be ready. Some friends are encouraging me to try other countries like Canada or U.S. but I still prefer to be back in the Philippines after my job here is finished.
